First Paper of the Recovering Jesus in Christian Ethics

I had an opportunity this quarter to take an ethics class from a distinguished professor at Fuller. I chose this specific class because it provided a challenge to demonstrate a comprehensive education and begin figuring out a theological "project." Week 1 started me out with John Howard Yoder's book The Politics of Jesus and this is my analytical paper which resulted.

The Politics of Jesus as a Theology of History

A divide of Christian ethic and politics permeated Western theology for the better part of four centuries, culminating in the nightmare of World War II. While many have undertaken the task of rethinking theology due to consequences of Enlightenment and liberal influence, few have put forth a work which confronts the social ethical world like that of John Howard Yoder’s The Politics of Jesus. While his methodological approach of historical criticism critiques how the church understood itself prior to modernity’s grasp, by providing insight into a hermeneutic which cannot disjoin ethics and politics, this method only demonstrates a plausible unity of the past and present. However, Yoder compliments his historical method with an exegesis through use of narrative theology. In order to connect the biblical narrative and pacifism as the fundamental understanding of the church’s relationship to the state, a bridge must be drawn between the two. I contend that Yoder creates a theology of history as an interpretative lens which gives him the ability to call Christians to a social ethic of pacifism centered on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.

Historical Methodology
Yoder’s use of a historical approach is crucial to his epistemological determinations concerning Jesus. Modernity brought about a separation of state and individual, regulating religion to the private life. However, through rediscovering Jesus’ eschatological claim “we find an utterly precise and practicable ethical instruction, practicable because in him the kingdom has actually come within reach” (104). Yoder, being a critic of modernity’s effect on systematic theology (103-109), follows the insight provided in the rediscovery of those questing for the historical Jesus. His historical approach bridges the gap of Jesus found in history and Jesus as normative for the church today. In taking this similar trajectory, Yoder’s reading of Scripture demonstrates the necessity of historical context by means of narrative, as opposed to past systematic theologies identifying three events, incarnation, cross, and resurrection, as sole means to contextualizing Jesus. Instead of using creed or doctrine as the theological interpretative lens, one which in the past caused others to negate the life of Jesus (p. 103), Yoder draws upon a historical context demonstrating Israel’s and the early church’s historical redemptive hope climaxing in the life, death and resurrection of Christ (p. 52-53). This approach furthers how one understands the role of Christ as the determinat of history by allowing a connection of the historical Jesus with the biblical narrative.

Narrative Approach
Yoder’s exegesis, both of Old and New Testament, defines political ramifications of Jesus based on a conception of God in history. The sovereignty of YHWH was the establishment of Israel’s history which caused them to “trust God for their survival as a people.” (p. 79). It was YHWH’s source of power who gave victory over other nations and YHWH who was credited for victories (p. 77-78). For Yoder, the understanding of God in history contextualizes Jesus’ life and message as perceived by those in direct contact with him. Luke’s account provides a clear example of Yoder’s argument, by various parties perceiving Jesus beyond a rabbi or moral teacher. He was the coming leader of social change as seen by Mary, Zachariah, and John the Baptist (p. 21-22), the rightful king challenged by the devil (p. 24-27), the Messiah as claimed by his followers (p. 38-39), and a leader of insurrection by Jewish and Roman authorities (p. 49-51). In sum, Jesus’ mere existence, according to the Gospel writers, was an historical event of God (54). It is a mistake to assume Jewish listeners of Jesus would have thought it inconceivable that God would again work within history to save them (p. 85). However, while many found him to be a leader of social change it was not according to Israel’s customary tradition. Instead, he breaks with the hieratical, authoritarian, and violent presuppositions of the culture; claiming a kingdom of suffering and sacrifice. While it may differ from the forceful norm, Jesus’ life was a political action of God working in history, and also one in which he calls others to participate.
Since Jesus’ ethic is not just an existential experience but a social reality, his teaching extends into the lives’ of his disciples and the early church. However, in scholarship prior to Yoder, a gap existed between what was perceived to be the Gospels’ immediate expectation of the social lordship of Christ and Paul’s hope found solely in a future salvation (p. 104-105, 109-110). The result caused many to doubt a connection of Jesus’ social ethic and that of the early church, but Yoder defends his claim of unity on the grounds of historical ordering of Christian canon. Chronologically Paul’s writings predated the Gospels, so to pose the Gospel’s imminent kingdom as an expectation only to be modified later by Paul would be to misunderstand their theological progression. Each Gospel account of Jesus’ social reality can only be understood in correlation with Paul’s proclamation of Jesus’ cosmic lordship, thereby unifying the actions of Jesus and the early church (p. 109-110). The examination of the whole of the “Apostolic tradition,” then, reveals much of what is the communal norm in Jesus’ call of discipleship and imitation (Ch 7). There are specific expectations to the meaning of the term disciple which often correlates to the imitation of their leader (p. 114). Since Jesus is intricately connected to the social call of discipleship and imitation, his ethic can be carried forth into the future. The ethics of early church is unified to their leader in the historical relevance (past, present, and future) of Jesus. It is crucial here to notice Yoder’s connection of Jewish understanding of God in history and the early church’s continuing concept of Jesus as God of history. However, God in Jesus entering history requires one more peculiar aspect of Christian theology.
Yoder’s historicity demonstrates the unique nature of Christian theology and continuation of church practice based on their value of history (232). The established framework, based on the historical Jesus, allows the church to continue in a tradition through a lived narrative. But, God’s sovereignty over history is not limited to the past or present. The church also has a futuristic hope in the victory of Christ. While some have sought to be deterministic with their ethical choices, believing that cause and effect are the hope of establishing a right future; Christians believe that it is only in the power of God through Jesus Christ that one finds hope and direction for the future. This radically shifts how Christians act within the world because instead of using violence and coercion as a means to gain superior ground, their actions are aligned with God who oversees history (197, 232-233, 236, 238-239, 242). In other words to negate God’s work in Jesus’ inauguration of the kingdom, by way suffering and love, is to lose sight of a futuristic history which belongs solely in the hands of God.

Theology and Church
Yoder’s connection between the historical Jesus accounted for in the Gospel narratives, the call of discipleship and imitation of the early church, and the overarching narrative of God’s victory leaves Yoder’s concept of the church in a very particular direction. Imitation of the suffering of the cross juxtaposed with the victory of the lamb in Revelation gives the church hope in God’s future kingdom in which Christ’s power reigns (233). However, this does not leave one trapped in a theoretical or far-fetched world since the church is the establishment of the inaugurated kingdom. Discipleship and imitation of Christ aligns the churches actions toward his victory. We are given no other choice but to understand the church as part of the political realm by taking action as the community against rebellious power structures.
Yoder creates a very district way in which the church is to understand itself. It is a two fold dimension which includes both submission to a state’s power, but at the same time does not imply compliance (p. 202, footnote 14). Christians understand that the established states are used in God’s overall history, but the states’ rebellion against God does not call Christians to be forever obedient to them (141-143). They church submits to the states’ opposition by suffering as Christ suffered and non-violently resisting the oppression of those who domineer by refusing to “collaborate” with certain types of power and instead taking the side of the victim (154). The church imitates Jesus in refusing to violate the rights of others (237), understanding that “suffering is not a tool to make people come around, not a good in itself. But the kind of faithfulness that is willing to accept evident defeat rather than complicity with evil is, by virtue of its conformity with what happens to God when he works among us, aligned with the ultimate triumph of the Lamb” (238).

Critique
One aspect of Yoder which softened his argument was lack of pragmatic relationship between the church and state. It is easy to understand why some confuse Yoder as a sectarian since discipleship and imitation are left more to small communities and not larger institutional bodies. By fear of the church’s voice being lost in the juggernaut which is the American government, a pragmatic story or attempt at a theory would have helped. This is not to say Yoder does not understand this need, but his few allusions to Christians having/using power (154, 161) leaves much to be desired. One way which could have accomplished this would have been to illustrate how his ecclesial tradition would address a historical conflict, such as the Vietnam War.
Furthermore, on the lines of western governments’ attempts at shaping history, Yoder’s view does not offer much on theological implications of Christians compliance of violence through their indirect connection with the state. This book was written during the time of the Vietnam War, and the impact of a government’s use of violence would be extremely real, but if the church is to take Jesus seriously, how does one go about suffering with the worldwide injustices? How does the church resist the use of taxes, goods, or services for injustice? Is this a concern for Yoder? I would surmise it is, but for the betterment of theology for the church, his conclusion was lacking.

Conclusion
Yoder’s work has offered a way church to be free from modernity’s attempt to place Christianity in a non-historical context, and demonstrated that a theology of history correctly shapes discipleship and imitation of Jesus. It is when we continue in God’s narrative tradition of the historic and eschatological realities wrought in Christ that social ethic of the church is brought to no other conclusion than to take up its cross by suffering in the name of the victorious lamb.

Accident Prone

I was surfing Monday and in the typical style of my accidents I was doing something nonthreatening (getting out of the water) and cut my toe on a rock. Didn't think much of it until I washed it out at home and had a quarter inch crater that was deep and dark red. After 4 hour of sitting in the emergency room and another hour in a room by myself I received 2 stitches.

Now to those who have known me over the past few years; many of you have expressed your concern of my ability to be accident prone. So, being the end of 2010 I have decided to make a list of all the things which have happened to me in the past 10 years.

1. Summer 2003 - Hit by a broken toilet 3 days into a construction job. Result: 11 stitches and a 1 3/4 inch scar on my left arm

2. Summer 2003 - Right arm swells up to the point of limited movement, had to go to emergency room to receive shot and antibodies

3. Summer 2003 (1 place of accidents) Fell 12 feet head first to black top, managed to catch myself of the second myself on the second bounce. Result: temporary amnesia (3rd time in my life) for 4 or 5 hours, black eye, 2 broken wrists

4. Winter 2007 - Run over by a go-cart (one that does 70 mph), literally had to be pulled off of me after it wedged itself on the steering wheel and my leg. Cut on knee cap which bone was visible. Another aspect which I consider part of the trauma is Josh Griffin poking my freshly cleaned wound with his dirty hand so he could claim he touched a real knee cap. Result: 10 stitches on my right kneecap

5. Summer 2008 - Dressed like a giant jar of Jif Peanut Butter kicked a sound monitor into a face plant in front of 400 high school students. Result: my pride was killed.

6. Summer 2009 - Sun poisoned and dehydrated while working outside setting up for a Jr. High Event. Result: spent the night puking and unable to sleep on my back.

7. Winter 2010 - Board leash gets wrapped around my leg wave hits me forcing me to kick a rock trying to balance myself. Result: 2 stitches in big toe.

There might be more to this list, but this is all I could think off the top of my head.

When I found out my sister had decided to attend the same university as I, Spring Arbor, I was beyond angry. We always fought at home and now it would join me in my escape at college. Quickly into our first year together at school, I was shocked to find out that in college that we were actually friends. This was a strange concept to me and reflecting on it, I enjoyed our friendship.

Upon moving to California, I did not expect to see my family but other than once or twice a year. Randi, however, surprised me by her desire to attend graduate school out here. She chose Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, which is about an hour away from where I live. Again, this unexpectedly has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. College were were friends, but in the course of the past of two years, Randi has become one of my best friends. I do not think I would have also chosen Fuller if it would not have been for her wisdom and insight. I would also have also missed getting to watch her grow into a person I immensely respect. I am not sure what I would have done without her. She has been a pillar of strength, a source of comfort, and above all my biggest encouragement. I am not sure how these next years will unfold, but I know that they will never be as great as if she was here.

Randi, I will miss our lunches after class, playing euchre, venting about our struggles with culture, watching Friends, and just hanging out. You have really been a blessing from God, and I am so thankful for you. I hope you stay encouraged in your journey and are confident in your leadership ability because God has created you special. I hope that one day we can live near each other again, even if you are married to Kris. Just kidding, you know I love both of you. I love you, miss you, and watching you graduate I am very very proud of you.

Disappointed...I don't think so

I have to suffer all the trash talk from Pac-10 fans, especially those who love USC. They talk as if they are the best in the country. I'm a Big Ten fan myself but I know we aren't the best and likewise they should realize they are not the greatest ether, I mean Stanford beat USC come on how can you think you should be ranked number 1 after a pathetic loss like that.

Well here is a little bit of news which made me excited, "USC Football gets 2-year ban." I admittedly will hurl this in the face of any USC fan who runs their mouth about how they are the greatest program and that they always deserve to be ranked at the top of the charts. You are not number 1 nor do you deserve it. I do not feel bad in any regard for the program or its fans.

I have to add this side comment: I do feel terrible for Katie and Ron Edwards, they are the only 2 USC fans I know who are not cocky or arrogant towards others regarding their team. They genuinely are great fans. So to you guys, I am sorry this happened.

Forgiveness Through Death

Over the past ten weeks I have been in a Death, Loss, Grief, and Dying class. Every week I was forced to interact, contemplate, and relive experiences of death. While my losses have been few in comparison to others, it has significantly changed me.

I read a book this quarter called The Crucified God which gave an account of Jesus' death beyond personal salvation. In fact, when we truly understand the cross we see that our God is not only a God of love but a God of suffering. This is not limited to Jesus' physical suffering in death, but suffering in the nature of the Trinity. We must realize God's suffering in Trinitarian terms. How does God the Father, God and Son, and God the Spirit share in this suffering since we believe them to be three and one together. What I realized through this reading was that God in his threeness and oneness not only suffered then but in some form continues to suffer with his creation as it suffers. God took the ultimate punishment, that of the worst criminal and suffered non-violently. If the Creator God does this, what does that mean for creation?

Through the events of the past I have harbored hate toward others...serious hate, to the point of no remorse. But the problem with hate is that it is violent; violent toward myself, violent towards others, and violent towards any future situation. It remains violent because I allow it to propagate my response.

The picture above is what I created. It is an icon to focus my thoughts and prayers on God. The box outside is painted black to illustrate how death surrounds us all. The red on the inside covers the entire box, showing how Christ's life and death literally changes the entire nature of the universe. And the cross is empty, signifying Jesus' resurrection as the event which places us in a state "already but not yet," resurrection started in Jesus but it is not completed for humankind. What this last part means is that as followers of Christ we are called to participate with God toward His future Kingdom, because it has started (with Jesus) but is not yet finished. We cannot bring this final time on our own, but as God's creation we are working with Him, through the Spirit, toward the time of restoration of all things.

My situation led me to ask the question, "how do I forgive my enemy?" If I am to call myself a Christian, I must participate in every way, meaning I cannot hate any longer. I realized the only way to forgive is in light of the cross. I can ask my question but only behind that which changes my reality, Jesus' death on the cross.

Through this class, project, and being utterly humbled by my best friend, I was able to begin the journey of forgiveness. It is not easy, and there are times where I default to my previous ways. Only through Christ's Spirit working in me and the continual focus on Christ's life, death, and resurrection will I be able to find my hope.

Keeping Dreams

I have vivid dreams almost every night. Most are really weird and awkward, I once dreamed I had to visit a friend at college but their college was more like a city, even though there are only a few thousand at most who attend. They had skyscraper buildings on ocean front property right on the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), but most awkward part was their elevators were anti-gravity so I always had to hold myself down so I would not hit my head, which was the major concern of this particular dream...and that was it (like I said weird). But in the past 6 months or so, some of my dreams have become a little different.

For some reason my subconscious has been playing a huge part of depicting realities of my mind. These dreams are usually about personal fears or life situations, and once in a while hopes and aspirations. I have also been keeping track of dreams which resonate or seem to have meaning. In order to remember them, I write these dreams down and keep track to see what is going on in my brain. The reason I am writing this now is because last night's dream gave me comfort by affirming a conviction of mine. In it I was given the perspective from other persons' points of view but also the benefit of my decision. I have to say this really started my day off right because I believe this conviction is one in which honors God, and also pushing me to move toward more convictions like this one.

I am curious to know does anyone else have vivid dreams or realistic dreams? Do you do anything about it?

Chris Pronger is a guy I have disliked as a hockey player because of all the cheap shots the Wings suffered from him as a Duck. However, now that he is not with them (and I don't have to listen to people in OC talk about how great he is), he might be the funniest person in the NHL. His team lost their first two games to the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Finals, and after those games he took the game winning puck, left the ice, and threw it in the trash!

Death and Resurrection

So this morning I was reflecting on some ideas of narrative theology and atonement theology. I have been struggling with how atonement theory (maybe only in Anselmian terms) can be conjoined with participation in Christ, or at least how it has been abused with modern conservative and liberal thought.

Here is the idea which struck me, it has probably already been written about but I have no clue.

Death and Resurrection are needed together to give holistic perspective of Christ. Resurrection points us to the future protecting us from narcissistic tendencies for salvation focusing merely on the individual, but simultaneously death is what keeps us from thinking we can achieve God's new creation on our own. Instead we see that we need Father, Son, and Spirit as on in the Trinity in order to bring about New Creation because of our finitude, and we also see that we are called to participate with God in his New Creation which gives us direction for the future. What this does it shows us the past (death) and shows us the narrative of the future we should be following (resurrection) and between these to polarities we find a proper tension for journey we are on as Christians.

Returning to the Middle

Before I entered Seminary, I considered myself, at best, mediocre in understanding my beliefs. I desperately wanted to grow not only in my faith but in all understanding of God, Scripture, theology, philosophy, and history. I desired to help people understand God in new and fresh ways, challenging us and our community to live a life continuously pursuing God.

Upon entering academia again I have been challenged, pushed, and inspired to learn about our Triune God in ways I never knew existed. Passion is the only way I can describe my attitude toward each class, each book, and each paper. I love every chance for conversation with people who are for more brilliant than anything I will amount to. But this has changed me...

In recent days and weeks I have been hit with the realization that many of the people I dialogue with outside of Fuller have no clue what I am talking about or experiencing. I know many people think school is waste of time, and "real world experience" is what is truly important, but I could not disagree more. My love for Father, Son, and Spirit is deeper and more profound than it has ever been. I am more committed, humble, and concerned with important aspects of my personal life as well as the lives of those around me. I am not criticizing people for not sharing the same ideals, I am merely stating a fact that there is a large disconnect between us. (If you are one of these people, please please do not see this as me belittling you).

In a conversation with my friend Cole Trikle Rice tonight I found myself perplexed at first, then ashamed. I have allowed myself to become selfish in my learning. By not giving due diligence of time and effort in breaking things down and making them understandable, I fail to communicate to others. I cannot go into a conversation expecting people to know words like ontological (study of the nature of being, existence, or reality), eschatological (study of last things), hermeneutics (interpretation), etc. As a pastor it is my responsibility to care for God's people. A main way in which this is done is by helping others communicate more fully in an understanding of God.

If we have had a conversation in the past in which this type of conversation took place I am sorry. There are a few of you this week which I know this took place, to you I am extremely remorseful and I plead for your forgiveness.

By the grace of God this will begin to change.

I always inquire of my friends which theologians they are reading or recommend. I want to be learned and well read in many different areas. The amount of conversations taking place currently is unbelievable, and I have not even scratched the tip of the iceberg. The 3 main people I have been reading as of late are: Stanley Hauerwas, N.T. Wright, Jurgen Moltmann.

One friend the other day took some time to write me an email with an fairly extensive list of people I should read for what I am interested in. He is finishing his MDiv at Fuller and starting his theology doctorate at Duke next fall, needless to say he is brilliant. Here is his suggestions for those who are important to theology, ecclesiology, community, political theology, etc.

I was having a normal day like most I woke up, worked out, showered, ate breakfast, and read the news. Nothing out of the ordinary and in fact I was enjoying my day.

But as I headed off to school things took a drastic turn. I left my house intending to walk in the sun. On the side of the street I was walking there was man and woman sitting in a car. I saw the man get out without a shirt and open his trunk looking for something. This is no uncommon especially on a hot day like this, but what I saw next shocked me.

The passenger door opened and the woman started to step out. I am not sure if she was disoriented or just did not care but she was not wearing pants or underwear. I was shocked and so embarrassed I almost starting running past the car. What blows me away is she neither seemed slightly embarrassed by my presence or made any attempt to hide herself.

I am not sure what it is about Pasadena but something is a little off here. In my short amount of time I have seen more strange things than the rest of my life combined. I'm definitely not in OC anymore.

Dreams and Vision

Dillon and I had some amazing conversation at Disney about dreams and vision. He told me about Walt Disney's deam for Disney Land and all it could become. People told him he was crazy and it would never work. It has made me think a lot about dreams and vision of my own and also reminded me of something I read in college by Andy Stanley. It goes something like this:

Accepting the status quo is the equivalent of accepting the death sentence.

Where there is no progress there is no growth. If there is no growth, there is no life.

Courage is not the absence of fear, it assumes fear. Courage is the willingness to move in a direction in spite of the emotions and thoughts that bid you to do otherwise, moving boldly into the future in spite of uncertainty and risk. I would rather challenge what needs to change and pay the price than remain silent and die on the inside.

This has been another spark to my soul and what I am called to do.

Disney Land

I have only been to Disney 1 time. It was last January with a group of people who had not been before. I liked the park because "Theme Park" is way different than the amusement park I am used to at Cedar Point. Disney is all about the atmosphere and they create an environment where everyone can have an enjoyable time.

Sunday I was walking into church when my friend Dillon asked if I wanted to go to Disney. I told him I couldn't because I didn't own a pass. He told me not to worry about it he could hook me up with a free one.

I went and have never had a better time at a park. It was so different from what I am used to be it was so fun to hang out with a group of people just messing around all night. My friend Kat took a ton of pictures and I now can remember this ridiculously amazing adventure.

I have been working on how I interact with people during the day. I have a tendency to get so wrapped up in what I am doing I don't focus on the more important part of my day...relationships. I have been trying to focus and care about people who I am talking to and not rushing through the conversation so I can get back to projects. I also try and keep a smile and be friendly because I overreact at a lot of stupid stuff.

I hope this will result in people loving God more.

I forgot about this story but I saved a post in my blog for it so I need to talk about it. Here is a reason why I will make a great Jr. High Leader.

Sunday service I went to watch my boss Katie speak, but before she gets on stage there is a game. I was standing in the back observing what I thought would be Jr. High students getting messy, when the MC, Bethany, asked for 3 leaders to play the game. I was standing next to a girl named Kate who thought she would be smooth by hiding behind me to avoid being noticed. This would have been a great idea if there was a crowd, however, when the two of us are the only ones in the back she might as well walked up to the front. I got a good laugh at Kate at as she got called to come up, but then Bethany turned my enjoyment into panic. She asked me to come up also and the sound guy whispered as I walked up, "you're done for."

Here is how the game went. A leader named Eddie smeared chocolate pudding all over my face, and two other students also had pudding on their faces. Then the third team member lined up to spit Kix at the pudding face. Not only did we win the game because I cheated I smelled like warm, sweaty pudding for the next 2 days.

A side note pudding sucks when it gets in your facial hair.

Reality Check Job Description

I was browsing jobs the other day online and here is something I came across in the job description,

"Our church is and has been going through a rough but exciting transition. This is not a TURN KEY position and this next year is going to take a very passionate individual who has a heart of gold and clothes themselves with the full armor God daily! It has been over 10 years since the Student Ministry has been at its full potential and many things have been pointing that this is the year for a revival. If you are thick-skinned and can handle ignoring church politics and focus on the fact that you are here to "Move Students Forward in Faith" send over a resume."

My first reaction was "wow you just shot yourself in the foot to hire anyone," but then realized this was a very smart move. This church has been going through some hard and public transition. While they are very realistic they are also being honest which I can appreciate. Whoever goes into that job will know what to expect and know they were not deceived into a position. I wonder how many other churches would do the same thing?

God Speaks about Fuller

Okay so explaining a little bit about my last post of getting accepted to Fuller Theological Seminary yesterday. Here is a prior event which happened before I even received my acceptance letter.

I woke up early to search for potential jobs, I had been doubting going to grad school based of being in debt more than I am. I thought would be more beneficial to put grad school on the back burner and return to it a few years into a youth ministry job. I got on Youth Specialties website to find a few churches that sparked my interest (which is really rare). They looked to be good churches with a Purpose Driven Youth Ministry mindset. I made a mental note and prepared to walk into the office and send them my resume.

However, day started off with an intern meeting where we all went to observe the Purpose Driven Childrens Conference. Like most conferences it started off with worship through music, and it was tempting to just watch because we were sitting in the pirate perch, which is the highest seating. As I let my heart settle down I began to pray, I usually pray during music sets so it wasn't uncommon. I sat and began trying to listen to God and this is what I heard, "You want a job out of desire for money not ministry. You can take a job somewhere, but know you will not be satisfied and not be in my purpose for your life. Know I have a higher calling than you understand." I knew this meant I needed to make graduate school a priority and told God I will do it but like usual I began to think of the sacrifices that come with school.

I finished the conference and went back to my office and when I got there a letter sitting on my desk. Knowing instantly what it was I opened it to find out I had been accepted to Fuller. People might say this is a total coincidence but I know this is God firmly speaking into my life letting me know that He is in more control than I will ever be in.

Hockey and California

My favorite the model of New York City. They are building the Freedom Tower which is probably about 20 feet high in that picture.

This is my host family! John works at Volvo, and Volvo happens to have advertisements at Legoland, including this Volvo XC90 full scale model. I think it is unbelievably cool and would love to have one!

NYC Day 3

Danny and I were going to try and see some of the city before our flight. We both woke up late and then went to an Italian place for lunch. I guess it was authentic and very well known around the city. I loved it.

Then we went to Ground Zero. I have not been around there since my freshman year of high school when I saw the Twin Towers. It was very surreal being there especially the major damage to the surrounding buildings that was still evident. This is a picture from the memorial at Ground Zero.

NYC Day 2

It was a phenomenal day, here is what we did:

Visited 5 HIV/AIDS testing sites in South Bronx, 2 in Harlem, St. Lukes Hospital, and Lower Manhattan.
Learned that NYC tests 300 people a year spending close to $500,000. CityUprising Conference helped get 1,000 people tested in one day for a total of $4,000
Met with pastors who were attending the conference. Kay Warren and David Miller shared their goal of the church putting aside all the petty differences, finding commonality in Jesus and moving forward showing people His love and care
Went to the conference heard David and Kay speak
Went to Times Square at midnight

I am still processing all my experiences and the information I heard. God is doing something big...

Today I had a PEACE trip meeting about going to Rwanda. It was interesting to hear what everyone will be doing. Something that really intrigues me is that we are not going to just give money, or build something; our goal is to partner with churches be self sufficient. The worst thing we can do is create a culture where we just give and forget to teach how because then we have created a culture where people are dependent on us. It would be a disservice to everyone if we are not helping churches to make their own culture better.

The Marvelous Wonderettes

I would not consider myself the kind of guy who would go see plays and stage performances but last night I went with some friends to Hollywood to the show "The Marvelous Wonderettes." It has received amazing reviews for the past year and a half. I was a little nervous but it sounded fun so I joined in.

Our group started off at a cool restaurant called 25 degrees located in the Roosevelt Hotel. We hung and had a great time. The food there is amazing! Then we took the subway to North Hollywood to El Portal Theatre to see the show. I have to admit that I was blown away by how fun it was. It is a musical comedy that takes place at the 1958 Springfield High Senior Prom. I laughed hard the entire time. I recommend this show for everyone. The only bummer is they are receiving so much notoriety that they will be moving to New York City at the end of the month. Glad I got to enjoy one of their last performances!

In-N-Out Challenge

Last night I was out with a few guys from my HSM small group and one of my guys, Stavi, asked me if I thought he could finish an entire order of In-N-Out's menu.

Before I finish my story let me take minute to explain the significance of In-N-Out to those who have not been out to California. In-N-Out is a fast food burger restaurant that is hailed by most Californians as the greatest burger joint of all time. I have NEVER seen a place so busy from open to close. While I find their product slightly above average, there is an experience I enjoy every time I go. If you ever come to the West Coast you need to at least come once and try it for yourself.

Anyway, I told Stavi I thought it would be hard for him to do. Adam chimed in saying he thought he could finish it easy. So tonight I have challenged my small group to our first In-N-Out Challenge. Every guy is going to have to order the entire menu and then try and finish it. There is a prize for the winner, and maybe a little something for second place. What is on the menu you might ask, below is a picture of what they will order...

Check out this article from Randi's blog. I think it might be the funniest blog post I have read this year. Here is my favorite part...

"Story number two starts like this. I decided to shower immediately after my workout yesterday and go to work. I stepped into the shower (praise the Lord for sandals, which I was wearing) and I smelled something really rotten. I looked down and almost threw up. Somebody had pooped all over the shower! Now I just want to take a minute and say how absolutely filthy! It is one thing to poop in the shower (which I think is down right gross) it is a whole nother game to poop in a public shower and leave it there! After showering, in a different shower I decided I had better tell the workers about this calamity. But here I hit a crossroads. 1. If i tell them there is a poopy shower they might think I did it. 2. If I leave without telling them they might see me leave and then find out there is a poopy shower and then really think I did it..."

I will be going to City Uprising in March. I am really excited to be part of it. I can't wait to see what God is doing in NYC.

Quick Update

March is going to be a month of travel. I will expand on that a little more in the weeks to come. I am so excited for what is going to happen. It is going to take a lot to pull it off but God is still providing.

Running

I have been running about 4 miles a day around the RSM lake. The past 3 weeks or so the inside of my calf has been hurting. I thought I strained a muscle or did not stretch enough so I was more diligent in stretching before and after. After doing some research and reading about running, I found out concrete (sidewalk) is the worst possible surface to on. The pain I have is most likely shin splints. Here I thought I was being a wimp but I guess maybe I just need to be smarter about where I am running.
